Greetings!

Conference „Medicine and conscience“- What do people need?"

The fifth international “medicine and conscience” congress will take place on October 14th and 15th 2016 in Nuremberg. Every five years since 1996 a series of IPPNW congresses has been held on this subject, each one dealing with various issues in the fields of human rights, global health, the history of medicine and medical ethics. The congress will feature not only renowned speakers but also will offer a platform to up-and-coming scientists.

The congress is organized by the IPPNW chapter of Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen, together with the German affiliate of IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War/Physicians for Social Responsibility).
What does a person need? What do doctors and other health workers need to enable them to do their work, in a human rights context and given the social conditions of the 21st century, in a dignified, healthy and enjoyable manner?

What do patients need? Living in a world where new technologies abound, and health systems are oriented towards profit, what can patients expect of us as health workers to protect their rights and to get the “good” medicine they seek? What are the limitations of this medicine?
What has been gained from seven years of e-learning with the Medical Peace Work programme? How can we go forward in incorporating prevention of violence and peacebuilding in our daily work as health professionals?

70 years after the Nuremberg war crimes trials of physicians in 1946, and 20 years after the first IPPNW „medicine and conscience“ congress, we will revisit the topic of German doctors and national socialism in today’s research and historical analysis, looking at what we can and need to learn from the past today.
We are looking forward to a interesting and lively conference, which will broaden our view and give us new insights, ideas and food for thought in our day-to-day work.
